Substances That Are Often Abused

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, roughly half of those clients who are struggling with an addiction are also dealing with a co-occurring mental health disorder. This can seriously complicate the process of addiction recovery treatment, since in many instances, clients who are dealing with a co-occurring mental health disorder are, to some degree, using their substance abuse to self-medicate the symptoms of the co-occurring mental health disorder. Making matters even more complicated is the fact that many of the clients who are struggling with co-occurring disorders are unaware that they are dealing with the co-occurring disorder at all.

The drug ethanol is more commonly
called ‘drinking alcohol’ or simply ‘alcohol’.

When a client is struggling with both an addiction and a co-occurring mental health disorder, but they only receive treatment for the addiction, they are at a much greater risk of returning to substance abuse. This is largely due to the fact that when the co-occurring mental health disorder is left untreated, the client will continue to experience the symptoms of the disorder after they have left the drug rehab clinic. In order to self-medicate the symptoms, the client may return to substance abuse. Thanks to dual diagnosis mental health treatment, we are able to ensure that the symptoms of the co=occurring disorder are eradicated.
